Caption

Portrait of Edmund Halley (1656 - 1742), the English astronomer who first observed a comet, which was eventually named after him, in 1682. About 20 years after its discovery, Halley calculated its orbit and period and predicted that it would return in 1758. He was England's second Astronomer Royal.
