Polykarp Kusch (1911-1993), US physicist and Nobel laureate. Kusch was born in Germany, but emigrated to the USA as a child. He was educated in Ohio and Illinois, and spent much of his career at Columbia University, New York. Kusch shared the 1955 Nobel Prize for Physics with Willis Eugene Lamb. The share of the Nobel was awarded for Kusch's precision determination of the magnetic moment of the electron. This work was carried out after World War II, and led to the development of the theory of quantum electrodynamics.
