Dr Christopher Langton, US computer scientist. Langton works in the field of 'Artificial Life', a term he coined in 1987 to describe his work on complex adaptive systems. Artificial life is the study of the evolution of systems of electronic organisms through behavioural interaction. Such organisms may exist only in a computer, or may be represented by robotic devices. This research is aimed at a fundamental understanding of the evolution and processes associated with intelligence, and their application to computer programming. Photographed at the Santa Fe Institute, USA, in 1994.
