Joshua Lederberg. Portrait of the US geneticist Joshua Lederberg (1925-2008). Lederberg discovered that bacteria can reproduce sexually by a process he named conjugation. He showed that about one in ten million bacteria in a colony of Escherichia coli reproduced this way rather than asexually. He introduced the technique of 'replica plating' for isolating mutants from normal bacteria, and also discovered transduction, a natural form of genetic engineering. He was awarded the 1958 Nobel Prize for Physiology or Medicine. Photographed in 1954. NO ADVERTISING USAGE IN CONSUMER OR TRADE MAGAZINES WITHOUT PRIOR WRITTEN APPROVAL *****.
