Lister (1827-1912), an English surgeon and pioneer of antiseptic techniques in the operating theater. Lister furthered Pasteur's research of disease-causing microorganisms, particularly in relation to surgical infections. It occurred to him that the germs infecting surgical wounds might be killed by chemical treatment. He instigated the use of carbolic acid (phenol) in 1867, after which the number of deaths from infection fell dramatically.
