Dr Christopher McKay. Portrait of Dr Christopher McKay, biologist and exobiologist, on a background of a collage of bacteria pictures. Dr McKay works at the NASA-Ames Research Centre at Moffett Field, California, USA. He is studying life at the very extremes of its range to determine the conditions needed for its initiation and maintenance. Using data from his studies of bacteria and algae living in the deadly cold of Antarctica, he has drawn parallels between Earth and Mars. He has theorised that forms of life may have existed on Mars around 4 million years ago, but were wiped out by extreme cold and cosmic radiation. Photographed in 1997.
