Professor Geoffrey Marcy. Portrait of professor Geoffrey Marcy, astrophysicist, on a background artwork representing the Solar system. Marcy is one of the world's leading researchers into planets around stars other than our Sun. He is professor of physics and astronomy at San Francisco State University, USA, and in 1995 confirmed the discovery of the first extrasolar planet, 51 Pegasi B. Together with Paul Butler, he has since discovered two other planets: 47 Ursae Majoris B (in the constellation Ursa Major, or the Great Bear), and 70 Virginis B (in the zodiacal constellation of Virgo). Photographed in 1997.
