Vassili Moroz. Portrait of the Russian planetary scientist Vassili Moroz seen in front of a Martian landscape. Moroz is a specialist on the chemical composition, structure and dynamics of the Martian atmosphere. Mars' atmosphere has become cooler and thinner during its life. Moroz is working on NASA's Mars lander scheduled for 2001 which will try to find out why Mars was so much warmer in the past. He is also researching Phobos, the larger of Mars' two satellites. Moroz works at the Space Research Institute in Moscow, Russia. Photographed in 1997.
