Francis McClintock. Coloured portrait of the Irish Arctic Explorer Francis L. McClintock (1819-1907). McClintock joined the British Navy and between 1848-52 went on many Arctic voyages, the last of these as Captain. During these he made many geol- ogical and meteorological discoveries. The methods he adopted during his long Arctic journeys were widely accepted by other explorers. In 1859 he discovered the remains of Sir John Franklin's 1845 expedition to find a waterborne "North-west Passage" through Canada's frozen upper reaches. McClintock made soundings for the first trans- Atlantic cable in 1860. This artwork was taken from A Modern Portrait Gallery, volume 3 (1881).
