Baron von Munchhausen. Engraving of a comical bust of the German soldier Karl Fredrich Hieronymus Baron von Munchhausen (1720-1797). Munchhausen served with the Russian Army against the Turks. He retired to his estates in 1760. There he became known as a teller of dubious stories about his life as a soldier, hunter and sportsman. These stories were later recounted in the book The Adventures of Baron Munchhausen (England 1793). Munchhausen's syndrome, named after him, is a disease in which the patient presents spurious symptoms and is addicted to surgery,.
