Portrait of Isaac Newton (1642-1727), produced by English artist Bill Sanderson to celebrate the 300th anniversary of the publication of Newton's great work, Philosophiae Naturalis Principia Mathematica ("Mathematical Principles of Natural Philosophy"), in 1687. Newton was professor of mathematics at the University of Cambridge (1669-1701) and President of the Royal Society (1703-1727). He developed the theory of universal gravitation, invented the calculus, and made major discoveries about light and optics.
