Denis Noble. Portrait of Professor Denis Noble (born 1936), one of the pioneers of the virtual heart which is seen on the monitor at right. Dr Noble's Ph.D in 1961 was on the electrical conduction of cardiac muscle. Later he developed models of electric current flow in cardiac cells which provided the basis for the computer-based virtual heart. This simulates the structural, chemical and electrical changes that occur during a heartbeat. The effects of new cardiac drugs can then be tested on the model, helping to provide more effective treatments for cardiovascular disease. Dr Noble is Professor of Cardiovascular Physiology at Oxford University, England.
