Alexander Oparin, Russian biochemist, born March 3, 1894. Oparin graduated from Moscow University in 1917 and became professor of plant biochemistry there in 1929. He is best known for his book "The Origin of Life on Earth" (1936), which sets out the steps by which life may have come into being from the origins of a methane/ammonia atmosphere and a source of energy in the sun.
