King Otoo of Tahiti. Portrait of the ruler of Tahiti, drawn by William Hodges during Captain James Cook's 2nd voyage (1772-1775). This voyage, in HMS Resolution and Adventure, was in search of a southern continent which was assumed to exist. The ships crossed the Antarctic circle and on the way made contact with a number of islands for the first time. Some, like the tropical Pacific island of Tahiti, were inhabited.
