Prokhorov's research group, Russia. Aleksandr Mikhailovich Prokhorov (far left, 1916-2002), head of the Oscillation Laboratory at the Lebedev Physics Institute, Moscow, Russia, he is discussing an experiment with his research group. Prokhorov worked in the Oscillations Laboratory from 1939, returning there after the Second World War. From 1950 he was assistant chief, and became head in 1954. The laboratory studied subjects such as radio waves, microwave spectroscopy, and lasers and masers. His share of the 1964 Nobel Prize for Physics was for work on masers and lasers. His other awards include Hero of Socialist Labor and the Order of Lenin. He was a member of the USSR Academy of Sciences. Photographed in 1965.
