Prof. Carlo Rubbia, Italian physicist at the CERN particle physics laboratory, Geneva. He won the 1984 Nobel Prize for physics for his role in the 1983 discovery of the W & Z particles, which are the mediators of the weak nuclear force. They were discovered at the giant UA1 detector built by Rubbia's team at CERN. Rubbia was born in 1934 at Gorizia, on the Italian-Yugoslav border. The photo was taken at CERN in 1983.
