Henry Royce. Portrait of Sir Frederick Henry Royce (1863-1933), British designer of cars and engines. Royce was forced to earn his own living from the age of 10. After various apprenticeships and jobs he founded his own company in 1884. In 1903 he designed his first car. After C.S. Rolls saw his third car in 1904 they formed a business partnership with Royce as head of engineering. They began selling the Rolls-Royce Silver Ghost car in 1907 and made their fortune. In 1911 Royce suffered a breakdown through overwork but continued designing from home. As well as designing the Phantom and Wraith cars he was at the forefront of aviation engine innovation.
