Carlo Rubbia (b. 1934), Italian physicist, at CERN (European particle physics laboratory), near Geneva, Switzerland. In 1984 Rubbia shared the Nobel Prize in Physics for the discovery of the W and Z particles, the mediators of the weak nuclear force. They were discovered by colliding protons and antiprotons in the UA1 detector built by Rubbia's team at CERN. Rubbia was director-general of CERN between 1989 and 1993. Photographed in 1983.
