Dead body of Grigori Rasputin (1869-1916), Russian mystic, following his assassination on 17 December 1916. Rasputin, born in Siberia, was a wandering mystic and healer who rose to power in Imperial Russia by gaining the confidence of the royal family by acting as healer to their son. However, Rasputin became involved in the political struggles between monarchist, anti-monarchist, revolutionary and other political forces, and, in 1916, he was assassinated in St Petersburg. Legends were told about how he had survived poison, severe beatings and gunshot wounds, including a bullet to the forehead, and was eventually killed by being drowned in an icy river. His body was recovered from the river three days later.
