American physicist Larry Sulak. He is a member of the Irvine-Michigan-Brookhaven (IMB) collaboration which built & operates the IMB proton decay detector 600 metres underground in a salt mine in Ohio. Formerly a professor at the University of Michigan at Ann Arbor, he moved to Boston University in 1985. The photograph was taken at Ann Arbor in 1984, and shows Sulak with a prototype wavelength-shifting plate he devised to increase the light sensitivity of photomultiplier tubes in the IMB detector.
