Benjamin McLane Spock (1903-1998), US physician. Dr Spock was famous for his best-selling book on childcare: The Common Sense Book of Baby and Child Care (1946). He urged parents to raise their children using common sense and with love and affection. His theory was that this would make the children happy and psychologically secure. These views developed out of his medical training as a paediatrician, and his training in psychoanalysis. His ideas were revolutionary, opposing the current medical opinion that said that babies should not be spoiled with too much attention, and parents should be strict with their children. The success of his book made Spock a household name.
