Arthur Schawlow (1921-1999), American physicist, in his laboratory at Stanford University. Schawlow shared the 1981 Nobel Prize for Physics for his work on the development of laser spectroscopy. The work used lasers to study the interactions of electromagnetic radiation with matter.
