Sam Ting, Chinese-born American physicist, in the control room of the experiment with which he discovered the J/psi particle in November 1974 at the Brookhaven National Laboratory, Long Island. The J/psi was the first known particle containing a charm quark. Ting is holding the plot showing the distinctive energy "peak" of the new particle. Ting (born 1936) shared the 1976 Nobel prize for physics for this work with Burton Richter, whose group at the Stanford Linear Accelerator Center discovered the particle at the same time. The photograph was taken in 1974 shortly after the discovery.
