Shinichiro (Sin-Itiro) Tomonaga (1906-1979), Japanese physicist. Tomonaga is best known for his pioneering work that formed the basis of quantum electrodynamics (QED). He proposed in the 1940s a quantum theory that the interaction between electrons and photons (subatomic particles) involved an exchange of virtual particles. This work gained him a Nobel Prize in Physics in 1965, which he shared with Feynman and Schwinger who did independent work towards establishing QED principles.
