C D Walcott (1850-1927), US palaeontologist. Walcott is famous for his discovery of fossils in the Burgess Shale, a formation which has since proved to be a most prolific source. A devoted Darwinist, Walcott believed that many of these fossils were 'discarded evolutionary designs'.
