Ernest Walton. Irish physicist and Nobel Laureate Ernest Walton (1903-1995) working in his laboratory. After graduating from Trinity College Dublin, Ireland, Walton went to Cambridge University, England, on a research scholarship in 1927. Here he worked in the Cavendish Laboratory under the famous physicist Ernest Rutherford. He performed experiments, together with J. Cockcroft, on accelerated particles. The pair produced the first artificial nuclear disintegration by bombarding lithium with accelerated protons. In 1952 they shared the Nobel Prize for Physics.
