Caption

James Watson. Portrait of the American biochemist James Dewey Watson (born 1928) holding a model of the DNA helix. Watson is the co-discoverer of the structure of deoxyribonucleic acid (DNA), the molecule that carries an organism's genetic code. From 1951, with Francis Crick, he researched DNA's structure, assisted by X-ray crystallography data from Wilkins and Franklin. In 1953 they discovered DNA's 'double helix' structure. Crick, Watson and Wilkins shared the 1962 Nobel Prize for Physiology or Medicine. Photographed in 1954.
