Hideki Yukawa (1907-81), Japanese physicist and Nobel Laureate. Yukawa graduated from Kyoto in 1929, gaining his PhD at Osaka in 1938. He spent his life studying the nuclei of atoms. In 1935 he proposed a new theory of nuclear forces. He predicted the existence of mesons, particles that have masses between those of the electron and proton. One type of meson was discovered experimentally in 1937 by US physicists. This work earned Yukawa the 1949 Nobel Prize for Physics, making him the first Japanese Nobel winner.
