Student measuring water uptake by a plant shoot (upper left). As the plant photosynthesises it transpires water through its leaves, causing water to be drawn in. This apparatus, a potometer, measures the volume of water drawn up through the shoot. It allows different conditions, which may affect the rate of photosynthesis to be measured, such as the intensity of sunlight.
