Wood anemone (Anemone nemorosa). It is found in ancient woodland, meadowland and hedges, and is an indicator of old woodland. In the UK it is rarely fertile, spreading through its root system at a rate of 2 metres each century. The wood anemone is used in herbal treatments for headaches and gout, but it is highly toxic and has been known to poison cattle. Photographed in the Northumberland National Park, England.
