Rhubarb plants (Rheum x hybridum). Rhubarb is grown for its edible red stem, which is ready for use from February to mid-summer. The leaves of this vegetable, in contrast, are poisonous. It is native to the mountainous regions of western China, but is cultivated throughout Europe and the United States.
