Aerial view of Grand Prismatic Spring, in Yellowstone National Park, Wyoming, USA. This is the third largest hot spring in the world, with a diameter of around 90 metres. The bold colours around the edge of the spring are due to the presence of thermophile bacteria, which live in large aggregations at the cooler edges of the pool. In the centre, the temperatures exceed 70 degrees Celsius, and there is no life. The striking blue colour of the water is there due to the absorption of red light by the deep (50 metre) water.
