Pleaching of a tree trunk. Pleaching is a decorative technique which involves many stages of grafting. Side-branches of a young tree are trained back toward the main trunk, and are grafted back into it. This gives the appearance of a 'hole', through which other branches may be trained. By using this technique at different stages of the tree's life, different thicknesses of branch may be seen in the mature tree.
