Autumn maple tree. Snow-covered autumnal red maple tree, Acer rubrum. Maple trees are common across the Northern Hemisphere. They are popular ornamental trees as during the autumn the leaves turn the brilliant red seen here. This colour change is due to the breakdown of the green pigment chlorophyll, which masks the other colours for the rest of the year. Photographed in Colorado, USA.
