Parainfluenza type 1 virus. Coloured transmission electron micrograph (TEM) of many virus particles of the parainfluenza virus type 1 (orange), also known as the Sendai virus. It is of the paramyxo- virus group, indistinguishable from the mumps and Newcastle disease virus. This virus causes minor respiratory infections in humans, mostly children. Individual virions possess a helical symmetry of their protein coat (capsid). They contain RNA genetic material. Small spikes which project from the surface of their protein envelope enable the virions to attach themselves to mucoprotein receptors on the surface of host cells. Magnification: x44,000 at 35mm size.
