False-colour transmission electron micrograph of particles of a virus causing AIDS (Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome). One virus appears to be emerging from a stricken T4 lymphocyte, a white blood cell of the immmune system. AIDS disables the immune system, rendering the victim liable to fatal infections. The virus (designated HIV - Human Immunodeficiency Virus) enters the T4 cell where its genetic material (in the form of RNA) is translated into DNA, & may subvert the cell's DNA into making copies of the virus, which bud from the cell wall & destroy the host cell. Magnificat- ion: x37,500 at 35mm, x75,000 at 6x7cm size.
