False-colour transmission electron micrograph (TEM) of a single AIDS (Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome) virus particle (roughly spherical, coloured red) budding from the plasma membrane of an infected T4 lymphocyte, a white blood cell. AIDS disables the immune system, rendering its victim liable to a number of fatal infections. The virus (designated HIV - Human Immunodeficiency Virus) enters the T-cell where its genetic material (RNA) is translated into DNA to subvert the host cell's DNA into producing viral progeny, which ultimately destroy the T-cell. Magnification: x37,800 at 35mm,x75,600 at 6x7cm.
