Caption

Computer graphics representation of the crystallographically-determined, three-dimensional structure of a Foot & Mouth Disease virus, a member of the picornavirus family. Precise positions have been assigned to virtually all of the third of a million atoms that comprise the spherical coat (capsid) that encloses and protects the genetic material (in form of RNA). False colours are used to distinguish the different proteins that make up the viral coat to emphasize their highly symmetrical arrangement. This image shows the "backbones" of the protein chains in the front & part of the back of the capsid. Image shows front & some of the back half of capsid, viewed down the five-fold axis of.
