False-colour transmission electron micrograph of a Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV) particle (pink), the causative agent of Acquired Immunodeficiency Syndrome (AIDS), infecting a T- lymphocyte. The virion enters the host lymphocyte, where its genetic material, RNA, is translated into DNA. This then hijacks the cell, forcing it to make copies of the virus. New virus particles eventually bud from the cell wall and the lymphocyte is destroyed. The depletion of the population of T-lymphocytes disables the body's immune system, leaving the AIDS sufferer vulnerable to fatal opportunistic infections. Mag: x100,000 at 6x7cm, x50,000 at 35mm size.
