False-colour transmission electron micrograph (TEM) of a single virion (particle) of the measles virus. The virion's lipoprotein envelope (orange) has been ruptured and the nucleocapsid (yellow) is emerging at upper right. The nucleocapsid is in fact a long, thin filament, coiled up into an almost spherical ball. The filament consists of a single, unsegmented strand of RNA (the virus' genome) wrapped in a helical protein coat. Mag: x70,000 at 6x7cm, x35,000 at 35mm size.
