Digitised transmission electron micrograph (TEM) of virions (virus particles) of the rubella virus, causative agent of German measles. Here, viruses (green) occur in the space (coloured yellow) between cells; one virus is emerging from a cell membrane (at top right). Cell cytoplasm (red) is seen at top and lower right. Each virus consists of a lipoprotein coat around a core containing RNA genetic material. The disease of German measles is spread in airborne droplets, occurring commonly in children as a mild rash. A rubella vaccine is now routinely given to babies which provides a lasting immunity. Magnification: x162,000 at 35mm size.
