False-colour transmission electron micrograph (TEM) of virions (virus particles) of cytomegalo- virus. The virus consists of a protein coat or capsid (red) within which is contained the DNA viral genetic code; this coat is surrounded by a lipoprotein envelope. Cytomegalovirus, a member of the herpesvirus group, causes cytomegalic disease in newborns: characterized by jaundice, an enlarged liver & spleen. It may lead to brain damage in the affected child. Transmitted to the unborn infant by its mother, who may have been infected with the virus without showing symptoms. Magnification: x13,700 at 6x7cm size.
