HIV virus. Coloured transmission electron micrograph of an HIV virus (centre top, yellow) budding out of an infected T-lymphocyte cell. HIV (Human Immunodeficiency Virus) is the virus responsible for AIDS. The T-lymphocyte cell (at bottom) is a white blood cell involved in the body's immune response. HIV viruses infect T-cells by injecting virus genetic material into the cell, causing the cell to form new HIV viruses. Once formed, these new viruses bud out of the cell, damaging the cell membrane. The T-cell may thus die, weakening the body's immune system. Magnification: unknown.
