Polioviruses. Coloured transmission electron micrograph of a collection of viruses responsible for poliomyelitis. This is an infectious disease, once known as infantile paralysis, which usually provokes no more than a mild illness. In more serious cases it attacks the brain and spinal cord which may lead to extensive paralysis and sometimes death. Poliomyelitis has virtually been eliminated from most developed countries since the development of effective vaccines in the 1950s. Polioviruses are small viruses (25-30 nanometres in diameter) belonging to the Picornavirus group.
