Adenovirus. Coloured transmission electron micrograph (TEM) of a collection of adenoviruses (round red-yellow particles) found in human faeces. Adenoviruses cause infections which are particularly common in children. When they affect the gut, as in this case, they may lead to gastroenteritis which is characterised by nausea, vomiting and diarrhoea. Other infections triggered by adenoviruses involve the respiratory tract and eyes. Adenoviruses have a icosahedral (20 faces) shape and their surface is made up of 252 sub- units called capsomers. Their approximate size varies from 70 to 75 nanometres. Magnification unknown.
