The symmetrical capsid or protein coat of the virus is seen at centre, consisting of 162 capsomeres (hexagonally arranged protein units). Herpes simplex is a DNA virus, occurring in two forms: type 1 and 2. These types are visually identical, but biochemically different. Herpes simplex is a parasite of humans, causing a variety of infections including whitlows and cold sores of the mouth & genitalia. Genital herpes is sexually transmitted, and associated with cervical cancers in women. Magnification: x200,000 at 6x4.5cm size.
