HIV viruses budding from T-cell. Coloured Trans- mission Electron Micrograph (TEM) of HIV viruses budding from an infected T-lymphocyte human blood cell. The cell is at bottom (yellow/red). HIV (Human Immunodeficiency Virus) causes AIDS. Four viruses are seen at different stages of budding: at centre left the virus gets its coat from the cell membrane (green); at right the virus buds from the cell; at centre right budding is almost complete; at left the new virus is free-floating. Once free, the HIV virus with central RNA (red) reinfects other T-cells. T-cells form part of the body's immune response and are weakened by the HIV virus. Magnification: x86,000 at 6x4.5cm size.
