Sheep Virus. Transmission Electron Micrograph (TEM) of Maedi-Visna virus particles budding from the surface of an animal cell. Individual viruses are seen with dark coats (at centre right & within the cell at far left). One of the cell's mitochondria is seen at lower centre. Maedi-Visna viruses are a type of non-oncogenic (non-cancer causing) retrovirus. They cause Graaff-Reinet disease, a chronic, progressive, fatal pneumonia which occurs in sheep and goats. The virus has an incubation period of up to two years and the disease typically lasts up to six months. Magnification: x50,000 at 6x8 inch size.
