Rubella viruses. Coloured Transmission Electron Micrograph (TEM) of a section through a human cell infected with rubella viruses, the causative agent of German measles. Several blue-coloured viruses are seen amongst the cell's organelles. A large dumb-bell shaped mitochondrion is seen running across the image. Rubella viruses belong to the togavirus group and are transmitted through air- born droplets. Each virus consists of a core of genetic material encased in a protein coat (or capsid). German measles causes a mild rash upon infection. However, the disease is particularly harmful to unborn babies in the first 4 months of pregnancy. Magnification: x40,000 at 6x7cm size.
