Rift Valley fever virus. Coloured transmission electron micrograph of a section through Rift Valley fever virus-infected material. The virus particles are spherical (small red circles) contained within host cells. Arrows show where the viruses are budding through the host cell membranes. Rift Valley fever virus causes a severe illness in domestic animals in Africa and is transmitted by mosquitoes to animals and humans. Infection in humans causes an influenza-like illness which can lead to death. Rift Valley fever virus is a member of the Bunyavirus family. Magnification unknown.
